How do you organize, or even function, during a crises?

I would like to learn some tips on how people, in the middle of a crises, manage their lives. I'm thinking mainly if a family member has a health crises, is in the hospital, but there are other things that can derail us (such as floods or trees falling on homes). Things happen and if we have a vulnerable family member we should have some kind of advance planning.

Everything becomes harder and we can "freeze up". It becomes hard to think.
What essential items should I take to the hospital or the ER with me?
We need certainly focus on essential things, simplify our lives in the meantime, but:
Bills still need to be paid. Maybe have them already auto-paid by your bank?
Gas still needs to go into the car.
Mail and deliveries at home still need to be picked up.
Grocery shopping (?) or just eat out, (if you are even hungry.)
House or dog-sitting? Child care? for runs to the hospital.
And what if the hospital is in another state? Travel? Hotel? What to pack? I remember my mom (many years ago) once telling me that she had to hurriedly pack to go to another state to be with someone in the hospital, and she could not think. She said she stupidly tossed her white (church) gloves in the suitcase.

Thanks for your thoughts.
